Travel to Mexico

MEXICO

Composed of 32 states, Mexico is a large North American country with unique attractions, starting with its traditional cuisine, which has been included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – the only national cuisine to be included in the list.

But one goes to Mexico not only to enjoy a good taco al pastor – a Mexican specialty – or a tortilla with guacamole, although the cuisine itself is worth the trip, but to discover a multitude of other attractions and destinations, among the most visited in the world.

Focus on a land of a thousand faces and colours.

The Most Popular Destinations

The most popular destinations in Mexico are Cancun and the Maya Riviera, Mexico City, the capital of the country, as well as Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos on the west coast. Those are also the regions most visited by Canadians. And for good reason: they are the ideal places to spend a holiday in the sun while exploring Mexican culture.

Mexico is a country so rich in culture and history that your first trip will whet your appetite. You will have to return many times to the same place and, even then, it seems that there is always more to see – a hidden treasure to explore, and that's what makes this Spanish-language country such a charming place and popular destination.

Cancun and its Lagoon of Hotels

The most popular and most commercial tourist destination, Cancun boasts some of the best beaches in the world. One visits Cancun to enjoy all the luxuries that Mexico has to offer, from the point of view of gastronomy, accommodation, and entertainment.

In Mexico, everything is done to make your stay enjoyable. It is a paradise of all-inclusive packages and relaxation. Gourmet restaurants, world-class shopping, relaxation spas, dream trips, and nightclubs galore; the destination is the ultimate in luxury and excess and drastically at odds with the reality of Mexico, a poor country. Nevertheless, the place is worth visiting, as you will spend a dream holiday in the sun.

The Must-See's

Among the must-see's in Cancun are a visit to Isla Mujeres, one of the most beautiful islands in the country, a swim in Playa Delfines, shopping in Plaza Las Americas, a night out at the Coco Bongo, and a stroll along Kukulcan Boulevard, where the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the country stand, proud and imposing.

This destination is ideal for those making their first trip to Mexico, since it is located 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen, a small fishing village that is part of one of the most popular tourist locations in Mexico.

Maya Riviera

Consisting of many small villages such as Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Punta Allen, and Tulum, the Maya Riviera is a tourist area popular for its beautiful beaches and cenotes as well as for the wealth of its Mayan ruins.

Among the Mayan archaeological treasures are the ruins of Tulum, located in the village of the same name, which are of breathtaking beauty. The only Mayan site known to have been built on the coastline, the ruins of Tulum simply must be explored during a trip to Mexico. You will also want to take in the ruins of Coba and Chichen Itza if you are staying in the region of Cancun and the Maya Riviera.

Mexico City

The capital, Mexico City, is also the country's most populous city. This is the place to go if you want to discover the real Mexico and learn about Mexican culture. It includes some 130 museums as well as many mezcalerias, the best places to savour Tequila.

Among the spots to visit if you are planning a trip to Mexico City are the neighbourhoods of La Condesa and Roma, real tourist treasures that abound in bars, restaurants, and trendy nightclubs.

Los Cabos

A tourist destination on the west coast of Mexico, Los Cabos will dazzle you with its spectacular rocky area and its breathtaking cobalt-blue waters.

Divided into two main areas – the city of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo – Los Cabos is the perfect place to enjoy the sun in a beautiful all-inclusive resort, shop at renowned stores, eat at fine Mexican restaurants, scuba dive, and admire whale shows.

Puerto Vallarta

Located in the state of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta, one of the oldest destinations of the country, is a charming town with a rich history. It offers breathtaking views of the Sierra Madre mountain range and the Pacific Ocean. One visits it to admire spectacular architecture, to shop along the cobblestone streets of historic Old Vallarta, to admire the flora and fauna, and to stroll along the Malecon, a popular tourist promenade overlooking the seafront.

Puerto Vallarta is also a great place to enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine, including its famous tacos available in many flavours.

Others Things to See in Mexico

It's not just the coastal resorts of Mexico that are worth visiting. Several other cultural destinations far from the beaches have everything to make your vacation in Mexico a dream.

This is the case of the Guadalajara region, capital of the state of Jalisco, where you can visit the fields of agave and taste tequila in Mexican distilleries (try the Tequila in the village of the same name), and San Miguel de Allende, the cultural village in the state of Guanajuato, whose architecture monuments and the colours will leave you breathless with admiration.

No wonder the destination was named best city in the world by readers of the respected Conde Nast Traveler magazine in 2013. Enjoy!
