At Southampton, the Norwegian Star casts off at four in the afternoon. Two days earlier, the group landed in London for a panoramic tour with a local guide, then took the road to Windsor to visit the castle, an official residence of the British royal family.
The cruise first runs south to France. From Le Havre, Paris lies one hundred and ninety kilometres up the Seine, and those who prefer to stay near the pier have Giverny and the old market square of Rouen within reach. Zeebrugge follows, opening Bruges and Brussels, then Amsterdam, where the canals are crossed by more bridges than in Venice.
The ship then heads north. Edinburgh is a walking city, from the medieval Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with the castle set on its volcanic rock. Invergordon opens the Highlands and the road to Inverness. Then Ireland, with Belfast and its historic quarter, and Dublin, reached by tender at Dún Laoghaire.
