Description
In Samarkand, Registan Square opens onto three madrasas from the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, and their tilework ranks among the most sumptuous in the Islamic world. The city was the capital of Tamerlane's empire, and it remains the stage everyone comes to see on the Silk Road.
The route begins further east, in Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek and its Osh bazaar, the ninth-century Burana tower, lunch with a local family, then Lake Issyk-Kul, the second largest alpine lake in the world. In Karakol, an all-wood Orthodox cathedral and a mosque built without a single nail answer each other from one quarter to the next. The road into Kazakhstan stops at the Charyn canyon, the valley of castles.
In Uzbekistan, fast trains link Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara. At Gijduvan, the group spends the morning with master ceramicist Abdullo Narzullayev and makes Uzbek bread with his mother before lunch with the family. Four nights in Khiva close the trip, inside the Itchan Kala, behind ramparts you can walk.
The tour is escorted in French by Groupe Voyages Québec, with one tour guide for the Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan leg and another in Uzbekistan. The package includes 17 nights of accommodation, 52 meals, one domestic flight, two fast-train journeys and the audio guides.
