Description
In the Douro valley, the vines climb in terraces to the tops of the hills. They take up every patch of slope, held back by dry stone walls, and the river runs below, wide and calm, widened by the dams. The M/S Queen Isabel sails there for seven nights, from Porto to the Spanish border and back.
The trip starts in Lisbon, with two nights in the city. A guided visit leads to Marquês de Pombal square, the Belém tower and the Jerónimos monastery, then the road runs out to Cascais and the Estoril coast. The next day takes in the walled town of Óbidos, the Cistercian church of Alcobaça and the fishing village of Nazaré, before Coimbra, Aveiro and embarkation at Vila Nova de Gaia.
On board, every visit is included: the Douro museum in Régua, the cathedral of Lamego and its staircase of 686 azulejo-lined steps, the Casa de Mateus and its gardens, a quinta with a tasting, Salamanca and its university founded in 1215, Castelo Rodrigo and the Côa museum, Porto with its cathedral and the Moorish hall of the Stock Exchange palace. The last day crosses Guimarães, the cradle of Portugal, and Braga with its Bom Jesus sanctuary.
A Rivages du Monde cruise offered by Tours Chanteclerc, guaranteed departure, French-speaking support throughout the cruise, drinks included with meals on board and during excursions, and gratuities for on-board staff included. The shuttle service between Quebec City and Montreal-Trudeau airport is available on these departures.
