The Dreams Acapulco Resort & Spa is closed. The chain says so on its own page: the property has temporarily suspended operations, and no reopening date is published. The closure goes back to 25 October 2023, the night Hurricane Otis came into Acapulco Bay as a category 5.

The twenty-three storey tower was torn open by the winds. Rehabilitation work was formally launched on 3 July 2025, once the insurance settlement came through, and it covers about six hundred units. The Mexican press has mentioned a December 2026 reopening, but the chain confirms no date, and the file has already lost time. We would rather tell you what we know than promise you a calendar.

Is the hotel open right now?

No. The official page of the Dreams Acapulco Resort & Spa carries a notice of temporarily suspended operations and the booking engine refuses new dates. We checked on 24 September 2026. No serious tour operator should be selling this hotel today, and if someone offers it to you, call us before you pay.

What happened on 25 October 2023?

Hurricane Otis came into Acapulco Bay as a category 5, after intensifying so fast that nobody had time to prepare. The city took winds above two hundred and fifty kilometres an hour. The towers along the Costera lost their windows, their balconies and parts of their floors.

The Dreams, with its twenty-three storeys facing the sea, was among the worst damaged buildings. It stayed wrapped in green netting for months, until the debris stopped falling.

How far along is the work?

In August 2024, the Acapulco hotel association stated that the Dreams was the only hotel in the city that had yet to begin rebuilding, because it was still waiting on its insurance settlement. That money was paid in May 2025, and the work was formally launched on 3 July 2025, with the governor of Guerrero state and the federal tourism secretary present. About six hundred units are to be brought back into service.

When will the hotel reopen?

Nobody knows for certain, and be wary of anyone who gives you a firm date. In November 2023 the hotel told travel agencies it would reopen in December 2026. That schedule was set before the eighteen months lost to the insurance dispute, and the chain no longer repeats it. Its official page carries no date at all.

Where exactly is this hotel in Acapulco?

On the Costera Miguel Alemán, in the Zona Dorada, at the back of the bay, on the Icacos beach side. That matters, because many people confuse this property with the resorts of the Diamante area further south, which face the open ocean and Revolcadero beach. They are two different worlds, for swimming and for atmosphere alike.

The building is the former Grand Hotel Acapulco, converted to the Dreams banner around 2021. Its address on the sheltered bay is part of its story, and part of its value when it comes back.

What was the hotel like before it closed?

Six hundred and five rooms and suites, all with a furnished balcony, in categories running from a garden view Deluxe to an ocean front Junior Suite with a double balcony, a living room and a dining area. A Preferred Club floor with its own lounge. Seven restaurants, including an adults-only Italian with an evening dress code, five bars, round the clock dining and room service day and night. Two pools, one of them salt water. A club for ages three to twelve and a zone for thirteen to seventeen.

All of that is in the past tense, and it should be read that way. A building rebuilt after destruction never comes back identical. The room count, the restaurant line-up and even the banner itself may change. When this page comes back, it will be written from scratch.

I had a booking. What do I do?

Call us before you call anyone else. If the booking was made with us, we handle it: the file, the refund or the transfer to another address, and the follow-up until it is settled. If it was made elsewhere, we will still tell you what to ask for and who to ask.

The chain directs existing bookings to its reservations department by email. It is slow, it is in English or Spanish, and it goes better with someone who speaks the language of the industry.

Where should you go in Mexico in the meantime?

It depends on what you wanted from Acapulco. For a bay, cliffs and a more authentically Mexican feel, Los Cabos is the closest answer in spirit, with grey whales from mid-December to mid-April visible from the beach as a bonus. The Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas takes families there, with a neighbouring water park included.
