SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA RESORT AND SPA

Sandals Grande Antigua occupies the island's longest beach, Dickenson Bay, with 373 rooms and suites across twenty-eight categories and, above all, two distinct villages: the original Caribbean Beachfront Grove, low-rise and right on the sand, and the newer hillside Mediterranean Oceanview Village. The resort is couples-only. Eleven restaurants, seven bars, six pools and six whirlpools spread across the grounds.

The position alone justifies the trip. Dickenson Bay is the longest and best-known beach on Antigua, on the north-west coast, and Sandals occupies its finest stretch. The sand is fine and white, the water calm, and the sunset arrives head-on.

The resort holds 373 rooms and suites in twenty-eight categories, which gives some idea of how complex the choice becomes. Eleven restaurants, seven bars, six pools including two with swim-up bars, six whirlpools and a Red Lane Spa. The formula is couples-only, and Sandals requires guests to travel as a male-female couple.

Two villages, two different stays

This is the key to the address, and it decides whether guests leave happy. The Caribbean Beachfront Grove is the original section: low buildings buried in vegetation, right on the sand, with the feel of a Caribbean village. This is where the rondovals sit, round pavilions under six-metre conical roofs with private plunge pools.

The Mediterranean Oceanview Village, newer, occupies the hillside behind. The architecture there is Italianate, the main pool covers 1 400 square metres, and the Butler Villa Suites approach 130 square metres with a private pool and whirlpool. In exchange, the beach is reached by a walk or a shuttle.

Couples-only: what that means

The resort takes no children, no solo travellers and no groups of friends. The clientele is made of couples, honeymoons and anniversaries, and the atmosphere shows it everywhere, around the pools as in the dining rooms.

Sandals requires each booking to correspond to a male-female couple. That rule is worth confirming with your advisor before booking rather than at the airport.

Which room to choose

Twenty-eight categories is a great many, but the logic reduces quickly. Entry categories give a comfortable room in one village or the other. Above them come ocean-view rooms, then the butler-service categories, which open personalised service from morning to night.

Two categories built the reputation of the house. The Caribbean village rondovals, with their conical roofs and private plunge pools, and the Mediterranean Butler Villa Suites, larger, with a pool and whirlpool. Both book months ahead.

Where you eat on site

Eleven restaurants, which settles the question of fatigue over a week. Bayside handles the buffet, Eleanor's the fine dining, Kimonos teppanyaki, Soy Sushi Bar sushi, Mario's and Bella Napoli Pizzeria the Italian, OK Corral the grill, Café de Paris the pastry, Courtyard Bistro the bistro cooking, Barefoot by the Sea the meals on the sand, and The Drunken Duck the English pub.

Seven bars fill things out, two of them swim-up. The plan covers premium spirits and Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks wines, along with a restocked in-room bar.

Is it an all-inclusive?

Yes, and among the most complete in the Caribbean. The plan covers meals in all eleven restaurants, drinks with premium spirits, the in-room bar, gratuities, taxes, land transfers and every non-motorised water sport.

Two inclusions stand out. Scuba diving is covered for certified divers, with PADI certification offered on site, which few resorts do. And unlimited green fees at Cedar Valley are included, with transfers charged separately. Exchange privileges with the island's second Sandals property come on top.

The pools, the spa and the activities

Six freshwater pools and six whirlpools spread across the two villages, two of the pools with swim-up bars. The large Mediterranean pool, at 1 400 square metres, is the centre of gravity of the upper village.

The Red Lane Spa operates as a paid extra. Non-motorised water sports, tennis, the gym and the daily activities are included. So is scuba diving for certified divers.

Who this resort suits

It fits couples on honeymoon or an anniversary, anyone who wants the island's best beach, and anyone who dives, since the plan saves them a considerable sum. It also fits travellers who fear tiring of an all-inclusive, with eleven restaurants to work through.

Families, solo travellers and groups of friends cannot stay. Anyone looking for a discreet forty-room address, or a formula without a package, will find better elsewhere on the island. Our advisors will say so plainly.

What to know before you book

Allow fifteen to twenty minutes by road between V.C. Bird International Airport and Dickenson Bay, roughly nine kilometres. Land transfers are included in the plan. Antigua sits inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September.
