Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos is a port city, capital of the province of Cienfuegos and municipality of Cuba. It is 228 km south-east of Havana.
History
Golf was discovered in 1494 by Christopher Columbus. During this time, the Jagua Indians resided there. The Spaniards built a fortress in the bay there in 1745 as a defense against pirates. Cienfuegos was created by French immigrants from Bordeaux under the leadership of General Louis de Clouet. Previously, the city was named after Colonia Fernandina de Jagua. She would later be named Cienfuegos which is the name of the then Governor General of Cuba, José Cienfuegos. This name was given to the city on the tenth anniversary of the governor's founding.
Culture
Many cultural events are organized every year in the city of Cienfuegos. There is the Benny Moré International Music Festival which takes place in September. It is a very important date in Cuban culture. There is also the Cienfuegos Carnival which is a very popular cultural day in the island and the region.
The unavoidable
José Marti Park
Its name comes from the great Cuban independence activist José Marti. It is a colonial square that is located in the center of Cienfuegos. This is a real gem of colonial architecture not to be missed.
The Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la purisima Concepción
It is located at the northeast corner of José Marti Square. It was built in the second half of the 18th century and is characterized by its neoclassical style. Its French stained glass windows have made it a popular building.
Tomàs Terry Theater
It is a magnificent colonial building located at Parque José Marti, in the heart of the city. You can visit the interior, whose design is inspired by Italian theaters.
