Travel in South Africa

Travel to South Africa

If you are looking for an exotic and exhilarating journey, a trip across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa will undoubtedly satisfy your greatest expectations. Indeed, this African country, located in the extreme south of the continent, is the perfect place to disconnect from a “Western” lifestyle and live an extraordinary experience. Desert safaris, elephant rides, encounters with giraffes; welcome to another world, that of South Africa!

Different Climates

We tend to confuse a trip to South Africa with a trip to Kenya or Madagascar. Although these two exotic African destinations also abound in tourist treasures, South Africa differs from them by its enviable geographical position. Indeed, bordered on three sides by oceans, the country enjoys different climates depending on which city you are in.

While the Atlantic side is characterized by a desert climate, the northern cities are tropical. For its part, the Capetown region, the urban centre of South Africa, enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Finally, the southeastern area of the country has a humid subtropical climate.

However, despite these minor climactic differences, all these regions have a common denominator: intense heat. Indeed, wherever you find yourself curing your trip to South Africa, you can be sure it will be hot. The sun, the sea, and enchanting landscapes are everywhere. The summers are hot and dry and the winters short, mild, and wet.

What to Do in South Africa

One goes to South Africa, or to Africa in general, to experience wondrous landscapes, to see some of the best beaches in the most beautiful settings in the world, to watch breathtaking sunsets, and to admire animals and exotic species of plants – especially flowers – that you cannot see anywhere else in the world.

A Safari with the “Big 5”

One cannot think of the words “South African trip” without conjuring the idea of going on a desert safari to see the country's five most dangerous mammals in their natural habitat: the African leopard, the Cape buffalo, the African lion, the rhinoceros, and the African elephant. Many companies offer safari desert tours with the “Big 5,” so you'll have many choices during your journey.

Among the best places to spot these five animals is the Kruger National Park in the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo. The park is also a paradise for lovers of wild nature, since the landscapes as well as the flora and fauna that you can discover there are of indescribable beauty.

Admire Wild Nature at Its Purest

Lovers of wildlife, wilderness, and flora will also be interested in the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Project. A sanctuary for many animal species that are among the most sought after in the world, such as the wattled crane, the bald ibis, and the bearded vulture. This project is a real gem full of spectacular attractions for tourists.

There, you will find, among other things, high mountains with steep peaks such as Drakensburg, as well as the Maloti mountains, which, along with Drakensburg, form a water reserve nicknamed the largest “Water Tower” of South Africa. Considering that there are also extremely rare species of alpine plants, this is the perfect place to get out your binoculars and camera!

The Most Beautiful Cities to Visit

Among the most beautiful cities to visit in South Africa is Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in Africa and the world, located in the province of the Western Cape. There, you can admire spectacular Victorian colonial architecture perched on the edge of small roads overlooking an azure sea.

Among the most beautiful attractions of the city of Cape Town is the rocky promontory of the Cape of Good Hope, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. There are many beaches with crystal clear waters to make those of the Caribbean envious, including Diaz Beach, reputed to be one of the finest resorts in the world. A photo will be enough to make you want to go!

Besides these sites, Cape Town is full of other tourist attractions that will delight you at all levels.

Johannesburg, Gauteng

Lovers of culture, nightlife, and entertainment will want to visit the richest and most imposing city of South Africa, Johannesburg. This majestic financial capital will dazzle you with its high skyscrapers illuminated at night, vast slums, obvious social disparities, museums and art galleries, colourful festivals, restaurants with an array of flavours, and trendy bars open until the wee hours of the morning.

Rosebank and Sandton

For exciting nightlife, check out the two modern and cosmopolitan districts of Rosebank and Sandton, in the north of downtown Johannesburg. The Design District in Rosebank, among others, is full of cafes and chic bars with rooftop terraces, open all night.

Johannesburg is also the perfect place to go shopping or see a music or jazz show. Be careful: Johannesburg is also the city with the highest crime rate in the country; so be careful while taking it in!

These are just a few ideas of the many activities to enjoy and towns to visit during your trip to South Africa. The country is so big with so many places to explore that it is impossible to name them all without writing a complete book. Nevertheless, this information should give you a good place to start in planning your next trip to South Africa!
